The Post-Binary asks about a future which is emerging right now. With software becoming smarter and robots ever more versatile, innovation and automation become seemingly omnipresent in large aspects of our lives. Although many applications such as self-driving cars, AI systems for clinical diagnostics or seemless augmented reality are still under development, there is evidently immense potential to shake up the status quo – for better or for worse. The question is: How do we use our new toolboxes? And what will human life be like when AI and its applications permeate society?
The Post-Binary aims at illuminating the role that AI plays in both art and society today and attempts to afford a glimpse of how this role might evolve. To this end we will hear from key figures of the scene, who will offer us their perspectives and elaborate upon their contributions to the field(s).
The talks on November 10 at the Museum Angewandte Kunst are open to all. As space is limited, a registration in the form below is required.
We ask for a participation fee of 5 EUR (students of the Hochschule für Gestaltung will be able to attend free of charge).
Due to the international origin of our speakers the conference will be held in English. Switch to our German Website.

WORKSHOPS
For a broader understanding of the complex topic of artificial intelligence we will host two workshops before the conference day. The workshops aim to provide an introduction to machine learning. They should show limits and possibilities of the technology and create a solid general understanding for the conference day. Two days before the conference there will be an entry level workshop and the day before the conference a slightly more advanced workshop will be offered. We currently plan to provide workshops on:
UNITY3D MACHINE LEARNING AGENTS
Since machine learning can be implemented in the Unity3D game engine, it is possible to get into it comparatively easy and with quick and interactive results.
EVOLUTIONARY AI
The advanced workshop covers all basics of co-evolutionary systems and builds up a Reinforcement Pong demo that will be parallelized and integrated into an Evolutionary Epoche-based unsupervised system.

Manuel is an artist, curator and designer with a tendency towards technology. His most recent exhibitions at Frankfurter Kunstverein and NRW-Forum Düsseldorf were using virtual reality to extend the exhibitions spaces. At the moment he’s working on the intersection of VR and artificial intelligence.

*Please select the background or alternatively interest you identify with the most. In case of too many registrants we will make a selection with a raffle. To improve the exchange between disicplines, we might bias the selection algorithm towards an underrepresented group.
Our Team
Together with Alexander Sahm in their music and performance project BBB_, through experimental electronic music, spoken word and immersive setups, they seek ambivalent situations happening at the interface of the human and the inhuman existence and speculates on various states of mind, relationships and self-perception, altered by socially and emotionally intelligent digital technologies.
